▼
i am a one-hundred and twelve year old male dragon. i am currently a second year student. i am asexual. a lot of people tend to call me denny.
PERSONAL
▼
[ABILITIES]
• diamond skin: scales hardened to be as tough as the most precious of gems, virtually impenetrable without the assistance of magic.
• manipulation: the ability to conjure and manipulate one of the following elements: fire, water, earth, or wind. deneb manipulates earth.
[PERSONALITY]
positive • compassionate, congenial, insightful, mellow, tolerant
deneb is the sort who doesn't take himself too seriously for the most part, and is a rather congenial person with a sense of humor. he's friendly, and doesn't mind laughing at himself. a mellow individual, the dragon is rather laidback, and tries to take life one day at a time. this outlook has made him a rather tolerant person, and he is slow to judge others. call it naivety, call it having an open mind, call it whatever you will, but his patience is what defines his compassion for others. he does try to see the best in others, even if they don't make the most stellar of first impressions. perhaps it has something to do with his sense of insight -- he likes to believe that people have their reasons, and that behind them, they are good people. while that doesn't always ring true, the dragon prefers to remain relatively optimistic.
negative • despondent, docile, evasive, idealistic, lackadaisical
those who know deneb very well will tell you that he dislikes dealing with his own problems -- in fact, he dislikes it so much that he will often go out of his way to evade them. unfortunately, this causes him to get rather despondent at times, because the truth of the matter is, running away from one's problems doesn't solve them. he sure as hell wishes it would, but it doesn't, and as a result, problems will persist until someone shakes him by the shoulders and forces him to dig himself out of the hole as opposed to unintentionally burrowing himself deeper into it. perhaps it is because he is still young (at least by dragon standards), but deneb is idealistic, perhaps to the point of naivety. everything will be alright in the end, he keeps telling himself -- but needs to learn that such is not a given. as it is, he's simply trying to get by as best he can as effortlessly as he can -- something that lands deneb a bit on the lackadaisical side of things.

The looks

[APPEARANCE]
(note: ignore the horns in images for now -- saving up for hybrid form.)
there's no way around it -- the first thing that most people notice about deneb is the obscene amounts of hair he has. long and thick locks of deep maroon with a blue-tinted undertone that go tumbling down just past his posterior, it is often uncombed and tangled from the sheer fact that things called wind and movement exist. the joke is that a comb would only get lost in it if he tried to brush it out, and on days when he wants it all out of his face, it's pulled up in a sloppy and often lopsided ponytail. eyes the golden color of sunlit amber are slightly turned down at the outer corners give deneb a look of being perpetually half-asleep even if he is honestly wide awake. he doesn't exactly have the most prominent of features, and the warm olive complexion of his face has a light but still noticeable scattering of freckles across the cheeks and the bridge of his nose. there are also some freckles across his upper back and all over the top of his shoulders.
standing at 5'11" in height and in possession of a rather lanky frame, the dragon is still in the midst of filling out, somewhere between the boy he once was and the man he will become. as it is, deneb's taste in clothes falls somewhere between getting dressed in five (or maybe six) minutes after oversleeping his alarm, fashionably frumpy, and the boy next door. think run-of-the-mill t-shirts and fitted jeans paired with rather oversized sweaters or cardigans and sneakers that, while comfy, were definitely made with fashion in mind more so than athleticism. in the colder seasons, he often has large knit scarves wrapped around his neck and all the way up to his nose, and has a preference for dark reds and warm, earthy tones. occassionally, there may be something clipped into his hair -- on those days, it usually means that he's allowed his roommate to do his hair. there are, however, small signs of his family's status that appear on his person from time to time. a locket here, a ring there -- all of them heirlooms.
deneb's dragon form is marked by its crystal spines and lack of wings, as is characteristic of the line of earth dragons that his heritage hails from. the crystals that the spines consist of most closely resemble aura quartz.

THE PAST

[HISTORY]
there are those who are proud of the traditions bestowed upon them by their ancestral history. hell, there are those who are old enough to be ancestral history. and then there are those who are caught somewhere between tradition and their own generation. this is where deneb al saeed stands -- he was born into a long, ancient line of dragons somewhere. the al saeed clan and their followers had taken to secluding themselves deep within the mountains of their homeland a long time ago, long enough that no one truly remembers the reason in full. there sometimes whispers and snippets passed along by word of mouth, but no actual coherent account.
what deneb does know is that he was born the third in line to inherit his clan's name, behind his eldest brother and second brother to embody all that they have held in value since what is rumored to be the dawn of all dragons. he held the esteem of the people he walked among, bore their wills upon his shoulders. or at least, he assisted in that endeavor -- he was not the one who would one day come to lead in his father's place. that was his eldest brother's calling in life, while his second brother was raised ready to take over the eldest's place should anything ever happen to him. he was only third in line, but even so, deneb was, perhaps in some sense of the word, a prince among his people -- a prince among dragons.
but growing up in this day and age, even in the very heart of the mountain peaks, there is no way to completely be oblivious to how much the world was changing around them. this world was no longer the one that his forefathers spoke of. even here in deep in the mountains, there would sometimes be the stray human or whatever else have you who would wander through. the dragons who lived under the name of al saeed clan masqueraded as a small group of people who had lived in the mountains for centuries, careful to keep their origins as dragons hidden -- it was no secret that dragons were largely unwelcome in the realm of man for one reason or another. their history with that of mankind was not too pleasant.
it was not discouraged, however, for the dragons under the al saeed name to go see the world -- it was encouraged, in fact, as long as one never exposed their dragon form. deneb’s older brothers, when they had the time to spare, would leave the mountains with him and take him to see the world. the cities of earth were bizarre to him, blinding and dazzling, but he knew one thing for sure -- the crystal caves of the mountains he had grown up in would always be home to him. nothing could take that away. the cities of mankind, while mesmerizing, were not home to him like the mountains. that, deneb was sure was going to be fact as long as he lived.
the trips into the realm of mankind sometimes brought interesting results, however. there was one time where he got separated from his brothers during one such excursion -- he forgets where exactly in the world this was, for he hadn't exactly been paying attention to his location when this particular event took place -- and somehow managed to end up wandering into what he was later told was no place for a prince, or a dragon for that matter. black market auctions, he learned, were more or less the last place he wanted to be for a number of very, very compelling reasons -- the phoenix he had unintentionally smuggled out was evidence enough of that.
it was sometime shortly after deneb had taken care of the phoenix and released her back out into the world as a free bird that the quiet routine of his life would be shaken up -- his eldest brother fell ill one winter, and never recovered. the first day of spring was when he died, and deneb found himself having difficulty facing that reality. he found it difficult to accept that his second brother was now in a hurry being brought up as the inheritor of the al saeed name, that he himself was now second prince and expected to be the proxy should his remaining older brother also perish. he found it near impossible to accept that he was never going to be able to see or speak to his dead brother again. changes were coming, and he was not ready to face them -- rather, he did not want to face them.
the entirety of the al saeed clan was turned upside down by the death of its heir, and in the wake of that chaos and his own turmoil, the young earth dragon sought a means to get away from it all for an indefinite amount of time -- and that means came about in the form of a school that had recently opened its doors again. a school for the supernatural, as the humans would call it if they knew was what he had heard. deneb convinced his family to let him go, despite his new position as second in line to inherit the clan and its name -- it was an excellent opportunity to learn about the world in a controlled, safe environment was what he argued when asked. and so he packed his bags, and left with their blessing -- no one needed to know that he had no intention of returning for a long, long time. home, as it turned out, would not be home for a long time.
